據說距今一百多前的英格蘭約克郡，Jenkins 兄弟二人經營一家名為喬治的賓館，在旅館大廳中擺放了一隻外觀優雅、走時準確的機械立鐘，兄弟二人精心維護照料著。但當哥哥去世之後，鐘突然開始每天慢了 15 分鐘，弟弟試圖修好它，但沒有成功。當弟弟在 90 歲去世時。這只鐘突然停止了。賓館新的擁有者聽了這個感人的事情後，決定繼續將它保存在賓館裡。1875年，美國作曲家Henry Clay Work／亨利•沃克入住喬治酒店時聽到了這個故事，他專門創作了題為《My grandfather's clock》 的歌曲，這首歌一直流傳至今，從此老爺鐘的叫法就流傳開來。
這種歌曲目前有三種版本，分別是英文歌、中文歌、日文歌，曲調旋律都一樣，但不同的聲調聽起來別有一番風味唷。
